Yeates takes Road Bike Challenge by three seconds

Colin Yeates took the annual Sotonia Road Bike Challenge run this year on the Lockerley, Awbridge, Dunbridge circuit. With an adjusted course used this time the length of the event was reduced to 15km.

Yeates had just three seconds to spare over young pretenders, the fast improving James Peckham and the club's current hill climb champion Ben Cady, who is racing again to prepare for the hill climb season.

There were also some tight battles further down the list with 18 members and one guest rider taking part - although technically two of these weren't on road bikes; Martin Ward and Graham Simmons.

Report on the Wessex Cyclo Cross League Round 1 at Newbury

Four Sotonia riders lined up at Newbury today for the first race of the season. Phil Connell, Simon Guard and Jez Hart in the vets and Dave Belcher (pictured) in the Seniors. The race was held at a new venue in mainly dry conditions (except for the Seniors race when it tipped down) - the Mary Hare School and the organisers cooked up one helluva course.

It was HUGE at 1.5 miles long and with a long, fast sweeping start around the playing fields then bumped your way round the grassy edge, through the woods an up the big 10%+ hill which was so bouncy I thought my wheels were square. Down through the campus for a bit of slippy tarmac, through an arch, up stone steps, down gravel drive and finished up with a spiral that went on forever before the final straight and repeat x 5.

The Vets race was big with over 90 riders and after a fast start, Simon and Jez began to move up through the field - not as quickly as Phil though, who was loving all the technical bits and was out of view after lap one, proving that having a saddle that doesn't fall off, does make you faster. We thought cross racing was every man for himself, but Simon and Jez stayed together for the whole race swapping turns on the front (which came in handy on the windy playing field sections). In the Vets 40-49 category, Phil came 20th, Simon 23rd and Jez 24th.

Crispin Doyle of Hargroves Cycles won the Vets, then, because 40 minutes of full-on racing was just not enough, he did the Senior race and came third!!

Dave Belcher finished 43rd out of 47 in the senior race.

Founder member of Sotonia, passes away, aged 91

Barbara Braithwaite, a founder member of Sotonia CC, passed away on Monday, 29th July. The funeral is on Thursday, 8th August, at 10:00am at the West Chapel, Southampton Crematorium.

Barbara was a lifelong cyclist, being a member of Solent & District RC., a constituent club when Sotonia CC was formed in the late 1960's. She set a number of VTTA age standards for Vets. One still stands in the current VTTA Handbook, of a 1.:32.:45 for 25 miles at the age of 80.

She was also a keen cycle-tourist, and her exploits over the years would fill a book. She will be remembered for a long time.

Yeates again... but only just!

It was a tight fought contest in Sotonia Cycling Club's 10 mile championship held on the Romsey - Stockbridge road last Thursday evening.

On a warm, pleasant evening conditions were good for an excellent field of 47 riders, and the battle for the top spot was settled in a three second win for defending champion Colin Yeates. Veteran Yeates repeated last year's win in a time of 23 minutes 12 seconds to edge out younger rival Stuart Martingale who came home in 23.15, whilst close up third was in form Gawain Young a further 16 seconds back in 23.31.

In the ladies championship past champion Wendy Knowlton (26.29) had 27 seconds to spare over fast improving Angela Burnikell, who recorded an excellent 26.56.

Fastest on the night but not eligible for the championship was guest rider Steve Dance of Andover Wheelers who recorded a fine 22.49.

The event also saw four novice riders taking part on a 'come and try it' basis, all of whom performed very credibly beating some of the more experienced competitors.

Unattached riders are welcome to ride Sotonia's events on a 'come and try' basis and full details of all the events and where to find them are on the club website www.sotonia.co.uk.

Calling the club's lady riders: series of women's events in 2013

The Bournemouth & District Womens Cycling Association was formed many years ago when women were not permitted to race with the men. The Association promoted and encouraged cycling for women at a time when it was a male dominated sport. The Association is still run by a committee of Ladies from various clubs in the South D C and it is affiliated to CTT.

Over the years, the B&DWCA has evolved from promoting ladies only club and open time trials, to now having all events open to both men and women. However, the various points and distance competitions are only open to women from Clubs whom are affiliated to the Association (which Sotonia CC is).

The club time trials are extremely informal and friendly, although adhering to CTT regulations. They also run reliability rides and have a social calendar.
