Starting from Carlo’s Ices and Tea Rooms the riders headed across the New Forest to Fordingbridge, then west out to Cranborne and north through Donhead St Andrew returing via Wilton, Old Sarum, Pitton and Lockerley.

The (touristic) high point of the route was the road that leads past a long, narrow lake on the Fonthill estate and through a rather splendid stone arch, which also marks the start of the return leg eastward.   The weather was, indeed, glorious: those of you who came in early reported temperatures of 21 degrees; the Silver riders had readings of 24 and even 26 on their Garmin thermometers.

There was some question as to what constitutes a “hill.” For me there was a long, comfortable ascent from Sixpenny Handley plus two briefer bumps: into Newtown and out of Pitton, the latter measuring 14% on the Richter scale.
