It was a lovely evening in the New Forest for the club’s 10-mile Time Trial Championship on the P164 course around Beaulieu Heath. Although conditions looked ideal, a slight breeze made it a deceptively tough night, while some riders also had to contend with one of the forest’s more unusual hazards: wandering cows!
Fastest rider on the night was Pete Boustred, who claimed the men’s championship title with an impressive winning margin of a minute and a half. Comeback rider James Peckham took second place, while Jon Dudley and Adrian Robinson shared third after recording identical times.
It was a particularly memorable evening for Dudley, who was celebrating his 66th birthday and his first day as a pensioner. His preparations were far from ideal, however, as he arrived without the correct pedals and was forced to start last. Despite the setbacks, he still produced a superb ride to finish on the podium.
In the women’s competition, 14-year-old Eve Carline was the fastest rider, improving her previous best by more than two minutes. Having progressed through the Sotonia Youth ranks, she continues to show great promise and is certainly one to watch for the future.
