June Segment Of The Month results

31 Sotonians braved the heat of June to sweat it out on a flat Coach Road going West out at the Tytherleys. Izzy Hall took the honours in both the U16 ladies and the all-comer ladies competition. Sophie Sellars showed both speed and strategic skill to play her joker on her second place, earning 8 bonus points. Jen Dawsontook third place.

That leaves Sophie on the top step in the cumulative competition, with some clear water between her and Jen Dawson in second and Debbie Hallett in third. Neither of those, though, have played their jokers yet.

In the U16 mens, Niclas Olley came home 3 seconds ahead of George Connell. Those two are tied at the top of the season competition, with Corbin Gregson now some way behind.

Although Andy Gardiner posted a time that was equal to the previous fastest time, Will Weynberg’s effort saw him set a new segment KoM, thereby guaranteeing top spot for the month. Jon Hall came in third. A solid 4th place from Jeremy Hubbard sees him into second place in the season competition, with Andy ahead of him and Jon behind.

July's segment

This month is a leg burning short 12% climb up Lynch Lane in West Meon. If you want to play your joker, let us know at info@sotonia.co.uk by Monday 3rd. As always, it’s never too late to join: the competition runs until October and full instructions are available here.

May Segment Of The Month results

We had 35 riders in this month’s segment of the month competition, which means that we’ve changed the points structure to give points to the top 20 (previously top 15). It’s good to see the added competition, as well as more youth joining the competition.

In the U16 female, Izzy Hall did well to play her joker: she came first and gained 10 extra bonus points. Emma Harrison came in second. Emma still tops the season results, though, thanks to competing across two months.

Izzy Hall’s time was also the fastest overall female, beating, Sophie Sellars into second, with Wendy Knowlton taking third. Just three points separate the top three women: Sophie Sellars leads the group, followed by Jen Dawson and Debbie Hallett.

The U16 male competition is tight. Niclas Olley was the fastest this month, with George Connell coming in second, followed by Myles Ward. George heads the overall standings by one point from Niclas; this one may come down to who plays their joker best.

In the male all comers competition, Andy Gardiner ensured first place by setting a new KoM. Jon Hall played a strategic joker with his second place, which he also shared with Joey Wynne. Jeremy Hubbard took the last spot on the podium. This leaves Andy leading Jeremy and Aaron Barry in the overall standings.

Full results are viewable here.

This month we go to the Tytherleys for Coach road going west. The climbers can take a rest, as the power riders come out to play on a 2 km pan flat extravaganza.

It’s never too late to join the fun. For information on how to join in, read the document here. And if you want to play your joker, you have 48 hours remaining, as it needs to be sent in by the end of Saturday. Good luck!

Tim

April Segment Of The Month results

April’s Strava segment took us out to the Forest, for a 2.5 km flat stretch on Hatch Pond to Brock. This was one for the weather watchers; you can tell those who found a tailwind to boost their times. Or at least, that’s what I’m saying to console myself with my time.

Debbie Hallett and Jen Dawson resumed their rivalry in the women’s competition, starting this season as they ended last: Debbie first, closely followed by Jen. Sophie Sellars took third, and Emma Harrison was the sole U16 female rider, so took the points.

New entrant to the competition, Aaron Barry, was fastest male, with a time 9 seconds faster than second, and the fastest time recorded this year on that segment. Paul Macken came in second, and Jeremy Hubbard made a welcome return to competition, taking third. Sneaky Andy Gardiner (last year’s competition winner) heads the competition though, courtesy of his 5 point bonus for having suggested that segment.

George Connell took first place in the U16 male competition, with a time that also put him in 7th place overall. It’s good to see some competition there, with Corbin Gregson and Niclas Olley rounding out the podium.

Full results are viewable here.

May's segment

The May segment will be Bridge to 30 mph sign, a steady 1.5 km drag up to Furzley.

Remember to let us know by Wednesday 3 May, either by posting in the SOTM Strava club, or by email to info@sotonia.co.uk if you intend to play your joker.

This competition is open to all Sotonia members. Full details on how to join are available here.

Sotonia silver medals in the BC South Zwift Racing Series

Gemma Wilks continued her race winning form this week on Whole Lotta Lava, mopping up sprint bonus points along the way in the women’s race. Her strong form led her to second place on the GC podium.

Dan Lickman led out the eventual winners on the final sprint in men’s B category, so sadly couldn’t make it 4 wins out of 4. However, he’ll be consoling himself with a fine GC win, a well-earned reward for 4 hard weeks of work. Chris Moody also made it into the top 10 GC.

Congratulations to the whole team of Sotonia riders, which also included: Hannah Budden, Vikki Sutcliffe, Jen Dawson, Danielle Thomas, Jenny Astall, Debbie Hallett, Virginia Phillips, Joey Wynne, Jerome Bakker, Rob Gasson, Mike Marsh, Mike Barrow, Dan Stephens and Al Cooper. Their combined efforts took Sotonia into second place on the team GC.

And that’s it for club Zwift racing for a while. We’re off outside – sign up to join us in the segment of the month competition.

Segment of the month competition 2023

This competition is back for 2023 and will run from April to October. We've selected 7 different segments (3 flattish segments, 2 longer climbs, 1 short vicious climb and 1 circular segment) that we hope will help you explore new routes and find some more favourites.

Each month, points will be awarded across four categories: male adults; female adults; male U16; female U16. This competition is open to all Sotonia members, in pursuit of prizes to be awarded at the 2024 annual prize giving.

Full rules, and details of the segments are available here.

Happy segment hunting.

Dominant performance from Sotonia women on Zwift Makuri 40

A strong team performance from Sotonia’s women was enough to take the team crown on the night and to lift Sotonia into second place in the team GC in the BC South Zwift 4 week racing league.

Gemma Wilks led the C cat women home, closely followed by Hannah Budden, Jen Dawson, Danielle Thomas and ViKki Sutcliffe, with Suzy Howick rounding out a superb Sotonia showing.

In the men’s competition, Dan Lickman made it 3 wins out of 3 in B cat; he must surely be feeling the pressure to make a clean sweep next week. He leads the individual GC rating in B cat. Jerome Bakker clearly spent the winter training hard, and is coming up strong, alongside Chris Moody.

One more race to go, next Tuesday on the Whole Lotta Lava course at 1900. Come join a winning team, and help the push to gain the overall GC crown. Just search for LIZR on your Zwift companion app for the link.

Sotonia on the podium in BC South Zwift series

We’re two races in to a four week series for any Zwift riders in the BC South region. This has an “individual GC” format for each Zwift category, as well as an overall team GC competition, based on the top 5 finishers.

Sotonia are riding strongly: in the women’s competition, Gemma Wilks currently sits in 2nd overall GC. In the men’s competition, there have been two podium finishes for Dan Lickman so far, ably supported by Chris Moody with two top 10 finishes (actually two top 7 finishes, but we like round numbers). A strong all round B team performance (from Rob Gasson, Jerome Bakker Mike Barrow and Mike Marsh (fresh from coming 2nd in the world indoor rowing championships ?) helps Sotonia into 3rd place overall in the team rankings.

Because of the format of this competition, more riders are always welcome. Next race at 1900 Tuesday 14 March on Makuri 40, with sprint bonuses and an overall GC. Look out for it on your Zwift companion app (BC South LIZR series) or contact us for the link.

Another Sotonia Zwift Win in Chase Race

Earlier this week, 73 riders started in what may well turn out to be the largest field in a single race organised by Sotonia. This was a chase race on Zwift's Casse Pattes course, contested with a few select clubs in the BC South area (Bath CC, Poole Wheelers, Southborough & District Wheelers & VC Venta).

67 riders crossed the line, and the handicap system worked out pretty well, with the front riders in B category catching the lead C riders at the top of the hill and then having a cagey run to the finish. Dan Lickman used his long sprint to take the win, from Andy Gardiner. Nic Stephenson from Poole Wheelers took the third spot on the podium. Chris Moody takes some plaudits too for some selfless chasing in the final kilometre or so. Congratulations to all riders involved, and watch out for more interclub Zwift racing to come.
